Harness Styles Explained: Chest, Body, and Leg Harnesses

"Harness" covers a lot of ground — from a simple chest strap to a full-body cage design. If you're new to the style, it helps to know the three broad families before you shop, since each sits differently and pairs with different pieces.

Chest Harnesses

The most iconic silhouette: straps that cross or frame the chest, usually with a ring or buckle detail at the center. Chest harnesses layer beautifully over a plain top, bodysuit, or bare skin, and they're the easiest style to dress up or down — wear one under a blazer for an edgy office look, or on its own for a night out.

Body Harnesses

Body harnesses extend the chest design down and around the torso, sometimes connecting to garter straps or hip pieces. They give a more dramatic, cage-like silhouette and work best as the statement piece of an outfit rather than a layering item. Most of our body harness styles adjust at multiple points, so take a little extra time with fitting — see our sizing guide if you haven't already.

Leg Harnesses

Leg (or thigh) harnesses wrap around the upper leg, often with a small pouch, chain, or ring detail. They're a favorite for festival and rave looks because they add visual interest without needing a full harness underneath, and they pair naturally with shorts, skirts, or swimwear.

How to Choose Between Them

Ask yourself how you plan to wear it:

  • Everyday layering: a simple chest harness is the most versatile starting point.
  • Statement/event piece: a body harness makes the biggest visual impact.
  • Festival or warm-weather looks: a leg harness adds detail without extra layers.

Many customers eventually build a small collection and mix pieces — a chest harness with a leg harness, for example, is a popular festival combination.
